In the 1980s, the current museum building was a recreation room for the Navy. During down time, a large HO scale model railroad built by Navy air personnel, consisting of three levels, train yards, parking lots, seven-story spirals, and more. The Santa Clara, Gilroy, and Fresno Railroad mainline is almost 300 feet long wrapped around the room in a J-shaped configuration on four levels. The layout features exquisite scenery, fun scenes, and lots of trains. The train room is popular with people of all ages.
The train room is open for display on Saturdays during regular museum hours, 10am-3pm.
